Reading the competitor gap
4 min read Updated April 2026
The competitor gap is the difference between your GEO score and a rival's — but the headline number is only the start. The useful insight is where the gap comes from.
Break the gap down
- Mention-rate gap. They're named in prompts where you're absent entirely. This is a coverage problem — you need to become a candidate at all.
- Position gap. You're both mentioned, but they're consistently listed first. This is a ranking problem — strengthen the signals that make the model prefer them.
- Sentiment gap. You're mentioned at similar rates, but they're described more favourably. This is a reputation problem — reviews, clarity, and differentiation.
Turn it into action
Open a competitor and look at the specific prompts where they beat you. Those prompts are the shortest path to closing the gap, and the Recommendations page ties each one to a concrete fix. Track the gap after each scan: a shrinking gap on your priority prompts is the clearest sign your work is paying off.
